Police have issued a witness appeal after a woman was sexually assaulted in Beddington Park, Wallington, on Sunday.

Appeal: Police are seeking witnesses to a rape in Beddington Park yesterday. Credit: Andrew Bowden

The victim, a white female wearing dark clothing, was attacked on the A237 London Road between 10.30pm and 11.15pm. She was attacked from behind near The Grange restaurant, before being forcibly taken into the park.

Detective Inspector Neil Matthews of Sapphire Command at Sutton Police Station said: “This was an appalling vicious attack on a vulnerable individual. It is essential that anyone who may have seen the incident at any stage come forward.”

Police took the unusual step of issuing a description of the victim in order to help any passing drivers who may have seen her with her attacker to come forward. There is no description of the attacker at present.

A forensic tent was reportedly visible in the park on Monday morning, along with police conducting searches of the area.

Witnesses are asked to contact Sapphire Command on 020 8721 4106. If you wish to remain anonymous please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

I agree whole heartedly, I used to live in Wallington about 3 mths ago. One of the reasons I moved away was because of the whole crime, gang related incidents that were going on, from attacks, to burgulary etc. It incenses me to hear how down hill Wallington is going at a rapid rate because, believe it or not, the majority of citizens there are good, honest and hardworking and Wallington used to be a desireable place to live. It scares me as Beddington Park was the areas best park to go to with the kids, mine have fond memories of there, but now, due to one of the minority, who are fast becoming the majority these days, Beddington Park will now be known as “the park that had that rape there”. So glad I got out when I did, a week before the riots, so glad my children now grow up in the countryside and not have this on their doorsteps. As Miss Owl has asked, please please let the police know if you know anything, are this man’s (sorry that should read attacker as no decent man would do that) partner, wife, son etc or anyone heard him bragging about it then don’t give him the opportunity to do this again, next time it might be one of us or ours.

My best friend will have to live with this for the rest of her life…..if you are the scumbag who did this and is reading this right now. She has alot of people who care about her. We will not stop until we have hunted you down and bought you to justice. Live in fear that you will be found out and no one will be able to protect you.

Rape can happen in any area of the world. I’ve lived in Wallington all my life and I have a child too I wouldnt be as dramatic to say its full of gang attacks and violence all the time, as most areas these days have various counts of crime going on. My thoughts are with the young girl and hope this poor excuse of a human being gets caught!

fully agree with Anon and Bert, and i do disagree quite strongly that Wallington is a place full of gang related activities. (Yes i live in Wallington). Throwaway comments like that causes a lot of scaremongering when it doesn’t need to. hope they catch the **** that did this very quickly.

the best was to deal with a rapist is to cut his mushroom off at the root and then tattoo all over his face in large letters RAPIST………..THEN THE PARENTS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO KICK HIM TO BITS

This girl really really didn’t deserve this and it’s played on my mind so much, my thoughts are with you and I am so sorry to hear this has happened to you. Lets hope this excuse of a human being gets caught before someone else innocent gets attacked. If anyone has any information however small please please contact the police. This girl deserves some justice in her life that has now been ruined by this disgusting act. Sending my love x

I live in Wallington not far from Beddington park and i read about the rape of the poor woman, it must have been terrible for her to have this happen. I don’t know if the attacker has been found yet. Some years ago a man was attacked in Mellows park and sexually abused by a gang i think it was. I moved to Wallington in 1977 from the East End of London and i thought Wallington was very nice just like being in the country after living in central London. I think the crime rate has gone up in the area there have been at least 3 robberies to properties in my road in the last year or so, My husband and myself have now joined a tennents association and a neighbourhood watch so have many of my neighbours. Problem is serious assults and other crimes seem to have gone up all across the country it seems in recent years in my opinion. Women as well as men have to be extre careful now especially at night when going out, i blame some of the problems in society on drunkeness which does seem to have gotten worse since the pubs and clubs were allowed to stagger their opening hours. But compared to many areas Wallington is quite a low crime area the police tell us lets hope it stays like way people want to feel safe in their homes and when they go out. I do hope the woman who was the victim of this terrible crime of rape is getting on ok and the evil man who did it is caught and punished.
