Hi all! God it feels like forever since I did one of these…
I apologise for the extreme levels of silence. A near-full-time job, coursework deadlines (of which I still have one in for… tomorrow, procrastination ahoy!) and general life stuff has kept me away the last few weeks, though I hope to remedy that come the new year!

Now, as you may or may not be aware, Spike.Tv does a yearly Video Game Awards, celebrating the best games in various fields at various times. It’s probably about as close as you’re going to get to seeing Video Game oscars. I figured seeing as it (hopefully) wouldn’t take too much time I’d list them all and make comments. These aren’t really meant to be serious, I’m going to try to entertain as much as inform, but it should be a touch interesting…

Taken from http://www.gameranx.com/updates/id/4039/article/the-vgas—video-game-awards-2011-winners/

My comments in italics

Best Xbox 360 Game:

Batman: Arkham City [Winner]

Forza Motorsport 4

Gears of War 3

Portal 2

It’s been a bit of a bad year for Xbox then, seeing as the game that won isn’t even a Xbox exclusive.

Best PS3 Game:

Infamous 2

Killzone 3

LittleBigPlanet 2

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception [Winner]

I feel it’s a bit unfair to call Uncharted 3 a “game”. It’s a visual spectacle but game implies interaction, and while yes you can press some buttons to make some stuff happen, the actual scope for interaction or even enjoyment (games are meant to be “fun”) is severly limited by the fact that Naughty Dog seem to want to make movies over fun experiences. Actually, not even movies, more like big, grandiose action sequences… Infamous 2 by comparison was a fun game, and at least Killzone 3 had the decency to try and be like Half-Life, a genuinely good series…

Best Wii Game:

Disney’s Epic Mickey

Kirby’s Return To Dream Land

Lost In Shadow

The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword [Winner]

Not too surprised here. LoZ is one of the few Nintendo games that really translates across. You’re not some plumber jumping on peoples heads or a pink marshamallow (Kirby) sucking/eating/whacking/yarning/multiplying in an oh-so japan-oscentric fashion, you’re an efeminet young man in tights swinging a sword around to try and save a princess (that frequently is actually more capable than you…) and who hasn’t imagined such a thing with gleeful abaddon at some point in their life?

Seriously though, I really need to pick up a cope of Skyward Swords. Didn’t get on too well with Twilight Princess, felt it was a bit too “young” on the Wii, but Skyward Sword by all accounts is a vast improvement.

Best PC Game:

Battlefield 3

Minecraft

The Witcher 2: Assassins Of Kings

Portal 2 [Winner]

Again, not a PC exclusive but lets be honest, first person games are always more tailored towards keyboard and mouse, and Valve would have almost certainly created P2 with that in mind. Strange to See BF3 without its near-homoerotic rival of CoD though, could it be that one was actually better than the other this year? Personally I’m seeing a coin-flip…
Also, I feel having Minecraft is a bit of a cheat, because while it’s not been officially released until this year, it’s been played for close to 2 in the open paid-for Beta. At least Notch has the decency to admit that a buggy game isn’t completed though… Unlike some people…

Best Handheld/Mobile Game:

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

Infinity Blade

Super Mario 3D Land [Winner]

Jetpack Joyride

2 DS games and 2 iPhone games… I’m happy to see Infinity Blade made it here, as it’s a truly remarkable and impressive use of the platform and technology, but when it comes to hand-held device, how can you beat the father of the medium with Mario?

Best Shooter:

Battlefield 3

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 [Winner]

Gears of War 3

Rage

Ah, there you are Cod. Well… Yeah, I’ll admit I was thoroughly unimpressed with the gameplay potential of most of the shooters this year, with only the army-wank twins of BF and CoD to really show up anything at the end. I really wish they’d differentiate between First person and Third Person though. Rage looked good too, I like their useage of textures to basically make things really.. big.

Best Action Adventure Game:

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations

Batman: Arkham City [Winner]

The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

“Action Adventure” is basically the miscellaneous bin of gaming, and it really shows why trying to label some games is pointless, but we feel the need to pigeon-hole everything. All modern games will probably have some action and adventure… I mean, the only thing really that any of these games have in common is a slightly douchey protagonist that either shouldn’t speak or doesn’t.

Best RPG:

Dark Souls

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Dragon Age 2

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim [Winner]

Skyrim was almost always going to win this, because Skyrim. It’s so massive in scope it’d almost be rude not to give it this. It’s a bit of a twist on the more traditional RPG idea, being more gameplay-influences-stats and all, but it’s a thoroughly enjoyable experience… I just wish it had a bit more heart and soul with its characters. Great world, crappy people.

Best Multi-Player:

Battlefield 3

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Gears Of War 3

Portal 2 [Winner]

HAHAHAHA.HAHAHAHA… *SNORT*… HAHAHA. *gasp*, *wheeze*, *dies*.
3 games, 3 SHOOTERS, that all pride themselves on their visceral multiplayer experience have lost out to basically a bunch of nerds building 2-player puzzles.
Made my fucking YEAR.

Best Individual Sports Game:

Fight Night Champion [Winner]

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters

Top Spin 4

Virtua Tennis 4

Can’t really comment on these, but I do always get scared by the continuously rising numbers besides sports games… It’s almost as if they’re basically re-releasing the same thing every year!

Best Team Sports Game:

FIFA Soccer 12

NBA 2K12 [Winner]

NHL 12

MLB ’11: The Show

OH MY GOD… THEY’RE RE-RELEASING THE SAME THING EVERY YEAR!

Best Driving Game:

Dirt 3

Driver: San Francisco

Forza Motorsport 4 [Winner]

Need For Speed: The Run

Again, can’t really comment. Dirt 3 looked cool though.

Best Fighting Game:

The King Of Fighters XIII

Marvel Vs. Capcom 3

Mortal Kombat [Winner]

WWE All Stars

Must have been a fairly dire year if a WWE title made it in. I’ve played a bit of the new MK and can happily say that it’s almost exactly like the original with one or two new bells and whistles and better graphics (with porn-like x-ray moves… creepy). So… yeah, I guess it deserves to win because it’s the same as a game from nearly a quarter of a century ago?

Best Motion Game:

Child Of Eden

Dance Central 2

The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword [Winner]

The Gunstringer

I actually liked the look of the Gunstringer… Seemed unique and interesting, but it’s a Kinect game so everyone probably hated it. Skyward Sword seems to have been Nintendo’s “ace in the hole” for this year, with the Mario games as a decent backup.

Best Independent Game:

Bastion

Minecraft [Winner]

Superbrothers: Sword And Sworcery EP

The Binding Of Isaac

Again, same issue as above that Minecraft has been being played for ages. Personally I would have chosen Bastion, though I do find it hillarious that someone actually had the Isaac game in the top 4, which looks a lot like a foetus running around and being bullied by other foetuses.

Best Adapted Video Game:

Back To The Future: The Game

Batman: Arkham City [Winner]

Captain America: Super Soldier

Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars

Bit of a non-contest here. the Back to the Futures are point-and-click games, and were pretty awful (past episode 2 or 3). Captain America is an adapted game directly from a movie, Lego Star Wars has kind of lost its way, and basically Arkham City is the only game that 100% been made from the ground up as a video game. The rest are based on movies or bad ideas, so have those inherent problems.

Best Song In A Game:

Bastion: “Build that Wall (Zia’s Theme)” by Darren Korb [Winner]

Portal 2: “Exile Vilify” by The National

Dragon Age 2: “I’m Not Calling You a Liar” by Florence + the Machine

Bastion: “Setting Sail, Coming Home (End Theme)” by Darren Korb

Well, Bastion got 2 plugs at this so it’s not surprising it won. Absolutely love its soundtrack so not surprised!

Best Original Score:

Bastion [Winner]

Batman: Arkham City

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Portal 2

Again, not surprised Bastion won, it had actual songs and listen-able-to tracks. All the others use their score to invoke a sense of something and add to the atmosphere to the game. Bastion did this and had good easy-to-listen to music by itself, so no doubt made it easier to decide the winner!

Best Graphics:

Batman: Arkham City

L.A. Noire

Rage

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception [Winner]

I said it was dumb, I never said it wasn’t pretty.

Best Performance By A Human Male:

Portal 2: J.K. Simmons as Cave Johnson [Winner]

Batman: Arkham City: Mark Hamill as The Joker

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception: Nolan North as Nathan Drake

Portal 2: Stephen Merchant as Wheatley

If Drake had won I would have shot myself in the foot. Really the problem with this is writing, not the actor themselves. Cave Johnson is a beautifully written character, steeped in irony, satire and self-aware humour. Drake by contrast is a bad action hero, and if you actually listen to the dialogue in the Roksteddy’s Batman games (Batmen games?) it’s rock solid cheese.
Wheatley’s a bit annoying though.

Best Performance By A Human Female:

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception: Claudia Black as Chloe Frazer

Portal 2: Ellen McLain as GLaDOS [Winner]

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception: Emily Rose as Elena Fisher

Batman: Arkham City: Tara Strong as Harley Quinn

Chloe is a good character, but not in it long enough. Elena’s in the game for all of about 10 minutes. Tara Strong is easily the strongest voice talent here, but Harley suffers from the same problem that Joker did, bad writing, or at least uninteresting writing, based on comic book tropes and cheese. Ellen McLain however has the benefit of great, intelligent and funny writing, and being a genuinely good voice actor herself.

Best Downloadable Game:

Bastion [Winner]

Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet

Stacking

Trenched

What an odd award. I guess this is their way of saying “best indie game for under 10 gigs” because if you’re on Steam or any other direct-to-drive platform then nearly every title would be included.

Best DLC:

Fallout: New Vegas – Old World Blues

Mass Effect 2: Arrival

Mortal Kombat: Freddy Krueger

Portal 2 Peer Review [Winner]

I’m glad to see Old World Blues here, as it’d be my best of the year. However a free Portal 2 DLC is very difficult to beat.

Most Anticipated Game:

BioShock: Infinite

Diablo III

Halo 4

Mass Effect 3 [Winner]

The Last Guardian

Aka “game with the greatest hype”. Ironically Skyrim would have won this if it was released in January! Mass Effect 3 was almost always going to win this. It’s the final instalment of an incredibly good series, with an overarching story that’ll see its conclusion, with lovable characters people genuinely care about and player choices that’ll “pay off” in the 3rd game. It’s also got the advantage(?) of EA and their goddam insane marketing, so I doubt any of the leaks of “accidentally released” bits of information, game demos etc as ever been an accident.

Game Of The Year:

Batman: Arkham City

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim [Winner]

The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Portal 2

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

Yeah… Just… Yeah. It’s a bit of a shame as I was thoroughly underwhelmed by all these games (excluding Skyward Sword which I don’t have). Skyrim’s good but lacks heart, and is really just a slightly improved version of Oblivion. Portal 2 is great fun, but lacked some of the intelligence uniqueness and atmosphere of the first. Arkham City seems to have suffered slightly in being a sandbox, and was apparently spread a little too thing, it didn’t hold my interest enough to get me to buy it in the end! Uncharted 3 is a genuinely bad game, but a good spectacle, dissappointing seeing as the previous game managed both.
I mean really, it’s like winning a race as a fat man because the rest of the contestants are in wheelchairs due to self-inflicted knee-capping.

Studio Of The Year:

Bethesda Game Studios [Winner]

Naughty Dog

Rocksteady

Valve

Bethesda pretty much ensured they’d win this by somehow and rather impressively having trasformed into a super-publisher in the space of a year. Brink, Rage, All the Fallout New Vegas DLC, and a few more that are on the tip of my tongue, plus their own Skyrim! Very impressive.

Character of the Year:

The Joker [Winner]

Nathan Drake

Marcus Fenix

Wheatley

Well, when compared to the other 3 of course the Joker would win, he’s the only one that’s truly interesting. Wheatley was cute but lacked depth beyond “power-hungry moron”. Drake and Fenix are both bad movie-tropes. Really I’m surprised no Dragon Age 2 characters made it, as though I can fault the game for being a game, I can’t fault its story or characters.

However, note there’s no female characters… I’ll talk about this further down.

Gamer God Award

Blizzard Entertainment

I guess this reward is based on “how much cataclysmic damage could be caused on a whim” because Blizzard and their army of Wow-zombies could manage that easily.

Video Game Hall of Fame

The Legend of Zelda

One of the longest-running and most successful game series, with numerous impressive titles. Deserved.

Female Issue

Me again: I’d also like to point at that the “Cyber Vixens” award has been missing since 2006. Now, I’d like to believe that that’s because the term “Cyber Vixen” is steeped in all sorts of “boys-club only” titillating teenage pandering, and that the industry as a whole is becoming more open and equal for everyone but sadly I’m more inclined to believe it’s for another reason.
First of all, take into account that “Character of the Year” contains no female characters. There have been female characters this year, Catwoman, GLaDOS, etc. Well, now take a look at the previous Cyber Vixens…

2006 : Winner: Alyx Vance

Ok, I can appreciate Alyx, though calling her a “vixen” is a little bit… Insulting? Implies coy, playful, sexy etc. Not y’know, a good well-rounded female character…

2005: Winner: Maria Menounos as Eva, James Bond 007: From Russia with Love

Who the fuck is Eva? I mean, the fact that they’ve had to reference who she is and where she’s from seems like they’re really clutching at straws… Lets look at the 2005 Nominees…

Charlize Theron as Æon Flux, Æon Flux

Jessica Alba as Invisible Woman, Fantastic 4

Traci Lords as Cassandra Hartz, True Crime: New York City

Joanna Dark, Perfect Dark Zero

Who the hell are these people?! I mean… The invisibly woman? A game adaptation of a movie for a female character? Eurgh…

This is my point, I think the reason why there’s only “Best Character” and it’s decidedly full of dudes, is because there are no worth-while female characters.

Last years Best characters?

2010 Character of the Year

Sgt. Frank Woods, Call of Duty: Black ops WINNER

Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood

Kratos, God of War III

John Marston, Red Dead Redemption

Again, all guys. Don’t get me wrong, Ezio and Marston are both beautifully well written and deserve their seats here.
And I don’t blame Spike TV, it just shows how bad the industry is with Female Characters. I really hope we address this problem soon.

Is there anything better in the gaming world than skulking across rooftops to then dive off and land on an unsuspecting victim, giving him a short sharp jab with a blade hidden in your sleeve? If you don’t think so then you’re probably a massive fan of the Assassin’s Creed series. Either that or you’ve been sitting under a rock waiting for such a game to be developed.

With the exception of the original title, Assassin’s Creed as a series has been one of my favourites within the last few years. The story of Ezio has been developed steadily across two games, and now Altaïr and Desmond also get increasing roles in order to start closing up some of the loose strings the players have. Revelations takes Ezio to Turkey in search of the masyaf keys to access Altaïr’s library. In this new land you’re greeted by new assassins and a new assassin leader, Yusuf Tazim. Tazim then aids Ezio in the search for the keys. Revelations also boasts several gameplay additions based on the pieces that felt missing from previous titles.

Ezio and Yusuf during an early cutscene

Borgia Towers are now replaced with ‘dens’. The initial gameplay mechanic works the same: you take out the captain and then light a fire in the tower. However you now have to defend these dens once they’ve been captured, throwing you into den defence mini-games. These are similar to tower defence games with Ezio overlooking a street and ordering assassins on to various roofs under which waves of templars and other guards will attack. You can also build barriers to slow your enemies down, and Ezio himself can shoot his hand cannon to thin the numbers. The addition is a welcome feature and allows for more gameplay than the Borgia Towers in Brotherhood provided, however the feature can become repetitive and even annoying as the defence marker has a habit of popping up just when you’re in the middle of something else. The tedious city renovation still plays a big part in earning money, and the mechanics are the same as Brotherhood, wandering around Constantinople this time, buying up buildings and shops in order to increase your income. This is my main bugbear with the game, and it seems like Ubisoft doesn’t want to stop expanding a game mechanic that is so benign and unnecessary that it’s merely an obsessive compulsive distraction. Looting gets you pretty much every ingredient and piece of ammunition to last you through the game and by the time you’ve got all the weapons you’re literally just earning money to buy more buildings which earn you more money.

Ezio using the hookblade on a zipline

The new hookblade is a feature you acquire very early in the game, which acts as a new weapon but also gives Ezio the same faster climbing ability that you needed to unlock in the previous two games. I must say this is a brilliant idea from the developers because introducing skills in one game which you then take away from the character in the next really removes an element of continuity. The other new mechanic is bomb crafting, which lets you choose from a range of ingredients which effects when your bomb explodes, how it explodes and what comes out. This is an interesting addition but after a time you end up just using the same three types of bombs and the crafting mechanic stops being relevant.

It will be intriguing to see how well Revelations deals with the triple layered story, as well as bringing in a surprising character that we didn’t expect to see make an appearance. You’ve heard many references to him but now he appears in the flesh…well kind of. Overall, Revelations is shaping up to be a well refined game that polishes many of the flaws that were noted in Brotherhood and Assassin’s Creed 2. The game flows at an unmatched pace and the combat is still fresh and immersive with the new weapons and flourishes available that add a bit more satisfaction.

Three Star: ***

More things go bump in the night, but did that include the writer’s head? Prepare to go parallel to the series, in this paranormal prequel

In the 1980s the concept of home CCTV was a brave new world powered by shoulder mounted cameras and VCR tapes limited to six hours’ running time. However, after hearing strange noises in the night, such a niggle does not deter Dennis (Christopher Nicholas Smith) from setting up his own amateur system to watch over his family in Oren Peli’s third installment of the supernatural shocker series. This bare bones prequel might reuse the same old formula to get its scares, but a creepy atmosphere is present as always and you will find yourself scanning the screen for the slightest anomaly, with your chest tensed against the inevitable moment of terror.

Of course, two movies later, many of us have grown accustomed to these scare tactics: easy-to-believe shocks, such as a moving curtain or pan falling from its hook, or even someone jumping out of a closet with a mask on and shouting “Boo!” These cheap thrills still have their place though. After all, they continue to work extremely well! It caused the two girls to the left of me to whimper into their popcorn for much of the film. In fact, they were flinching so much, they even ended up booting the row of seats in front of them. That said, the frights are a little more fun this time, with some innovative efforts having been made (including an ingenious modification to an electric fan) in order to give us something new to see. In one scene the tension is achieved with a single simple sheet. The violent undertones are heavier than ever too, and the being itself seems to appear at moments, suggesting evil energy in its rawest form. Flitting shadows are an unnervingly believable manifestation and is by far scarier than falling furniture.

The bulk of the plot focuses on the friendship between Kristi (Jessica Tyler Brown) and an entity named ‘Toby’, which, obviously, takes a sinister turn for the worse. As before, the spirit becomes malevolent towards her and sister Katie (Chloe Csengery), to the extent that this likable family has to flee their home. However, this is where the unexpected occurs and it deviates from the original plot devices. Even though PA3 is about the same two sisters, nothing is explained from PA1 and PA2. In fact, the saga is actually complicated by having things added to it instead. In some ways, it almost becomes another film entirely, and there were traces of The Last Exorcist in its rather disappointing ending. Even the demon seemed to be different to the original and I was unable to decide whether this was intended, or not. If the film had been a stand-alone picture, it would have made little difference. The big questions remain unanswered.

And so this apparent reinvention of the plot seems to suggest that there will be several sequels before we get our answers. Such a notion leaves me feeling a little concerned for the series. It would be a shame if it ended up like the Saw franchise, done to death and relying on upchucks of the same old shocks in order to get a cheap laugh.

But the show has already started with street performances, balloon artists and Sparky the giant robot entertaining kids at St Ann’s Road.

Ahead of his performance, Johnny Robinson said: “I’m thrilled to be able to come back to Harrow to help launch the countdown to Christmas!

“I had such great support from local people during the X Factor and it will be fantastic to say thank you in person, as well as give my backing to local traders during the Christmas shopping period. I look forward to seeing lots of you in Harrow Town Centre!”

The Christmas lights along St Ann’s Road and Station Road were installed by Harrow Council with the £860,000 won from the Mayor of London’s Outer London Fund to revitalise the shopping district.

Keith Ferry, Harrow Council’s portfolio holder for planning and economic development, said: “Johnny did Harrow proud during his time on the X Factor and we’re delighted that he’ll be joining us.”

He added: “The Mayor’s Outer London Fund aims to bring more shoppers to town centres like Harrow.

“It funds initiatives to dress up high streets and Harrow’s eye catching ‘light garden’ and festive lights caught the attention of the judges. We’re hoping you come and enjoy the lights, see Johnny, and shop for Christmas in the Town Centre.”

The ‘light garden’ art installation is now lit up outside St George’s Centre. It features giant snowdrops and lotus flowers around a giant alium flower. It was created by artist Jig Cochrane, who is responsible for October’s display of giant tulips for the Diwali celebrations.

Earlier this week The West Londoner spoke to the UK Independence Party’s candidate for the Feltham and Heston by-election happening this month, Andrew Charalambous.

He is the party’s Housing spokesman and stood for the Conservatives in Edmonton in the general election before defecting.

Why are you standing for Feltham & Heston?

“UKIP are on about 11 per cent in the national polls now and it’s high time the party had its first member of parliament,” says Charalambous. “It would change the entire political landscape and every by election is an opportunity.”

“I think the majority of people at the moment are suffering. We’re sending 50 million every day to the EU,” says the 44-year-old property developer. “That money should be invested in Britain.”

What will you do if you are elected as Feltham & Heston’s MP?

“We need to invest more money into making council services better and we need to make it easier for people to exercise the right to buy,” says Charalambous. “People will not exercise their right to buy if their property or their council estate as a whole are not in the right condition so we need to work on that.”

He adds: “There’s a lot of young gangs hanging around the council estates making the more vulnerable sections of the population feel uncomfortable.

“We need to create more jobs and more investment. If you look at the M4 corridor we have BSkyB and others. We could bring those people further in to Feltham and Heston.”

“We should encourage young enterprise. Business mentors can offer guidance to young people. We could give local businesses a reduction on their business rates. There’s a difference between the national economy and the local economy; building enterprise from the bottom up.”

You speak a lot about youth; what about other sections of the population?

“I think it’s a scandal how we treat our elderly. If you’re elderly you’re more likely to be a victim of discrimination and of crime. We understand that younger people find it hard in this economic climate; how much harder is it if you’re 85, wheelchair bound , disabled, blind, and trying to deal with the current economic climate then? Looking at provisions for care and facilities for the elderly is very important.”

“The Conservatives haven’t implemented policies they said they would have prevented many of our elderly dying because of fuel poverty. They don’t earn enough from their pensions, that’s the bottom line.

How would you fund your plans?

“We would fund them by not wasting £50 million a day on Europe. We’ve got probably a quarter more public sector workers than we need.”

“Britain spent money on – let’s not hide this – two or three useless wars from which the British people haven’t benefited at all. You may have heard about the ex-soldier who came back to Heston and can’t get housing. This is how we treat our heroes. If UKIP were in a position to influence government we would have stood against these unnecessary wars.”

“If you take the local council it needs to be more transparent. We need to cut down the pay of council executives to three or four figure sums. We need to make these people accountable for their spending and we need them to stop spending money on political correctness and self promoting budgets.”

UKIP has an enduring image of being a party affected by race. Is that true?

“We are in no way a racist party. We have members from all races, colours and backgrounds. UKIP is a party that says immigration isn’t a negative thing – the country need a degree of immigration. We believe that we need to integrate the people who are already here. I think withdrawing from Europe is the best way, which means we won’t have to take the half a million people a year coming from Europe. Then we can give more priority to people coming, for example, from the Indian subcontinent.”

Transparency statement: the UKIP press office contacted The West Londoner to offer us the interview. If you work for a political party with a candidate standing in Feltham & Heston, please use the Contact Us link to get in touch.

Four Stars: ****

“No B-17s were harmed in the making of this film!”

It is a war story which has been retold many a time, and yet it never gets old! The tale of a bomber crew up against all odds, who yearn to trade the flak-blackened skies for the comforts of home, as they struggle to complete their tour of duty. And there is no better example of this than the crew of the Flying Fortress Lucky Lass, operating from a sandy strip in the Algerian desert, during the 1943 bombing of Rome.

Despite having a pretty much unknown cast (Bug Hall, Donnie Jeffcoat and Sean McGowan anyone?), as well as the fact that it relies completely on CGI for the battle scenes, the quality of this B-movie was a pleasant surprise over the usual straight-to-DVD releases.

Seeing as there are only 12 flying B-17s left, the film-makers can be forgiven for not being entirely authentic (this is even addressed in the credits, in a very tongue-in-cheek manner) although only extreme levels of scrutiny will reveal any flaws. In other words, you would need to be the ultimate spotter, who can identify incorrect rivets on a gun turret window frame, to notice and/or be bothered by it.

For the rest of the time, the rapid pace of an air war makes us forget that we are looking at a digital rendering, persuading us that the Lass is airborne once more! She looks and sounds just as she should. The attention to detail is not just limited to the aircraft; it would have been so easy for the makers to use generic patch-work quilt landscape scenery, but when we find ourselves peering down the bomb-sight we see an actual rendition of the city of Rome, complete with Coliseum.

Much has been said about the inauthentic dialogue too. Some scenes go as far to suggest the crew are none other than the grandfathers of the lads who star in American Pie, because of the way they speak of birds and boozing during their down-time.

A side-plot even involves a home-made (and thoroughly illegal) still, in which the characters extract alcohol from aviation fuel to make their own moonshine. Fittingly, the still’s owner is a red-haired lad called Bert (Chris Owen), who was none other than the Shermanator in the teen romp comedies! He even speaks of his still in the same way his adolescent alter-ego might talk of an elaborately constructed beer pong game many years later.

But, while this portrayal has been criticised by some, I actually found it strangely authentic. So perhaps they do speak in a fairly modern way … apart from the odd moment, it is not at all that noticeable! Considering the grim reality of fighting in the skies, it is not surprising to learn that crazy hijinks were not an uncommon way to unwind on an airbase. To quote one of the actors: “There’s more to being a bomber pilot than just flying.”

As for the crew’s actual fate, well, just remember that their moment of glory will come at a time when there was still no end in sight for the war. Whatever they achieve now will soon be buried under more bloodshed, and many more young men will be sacrificed before peace is won. Watch this in memory of these magnificent flying machines and the people who flew and fought in them. It might not carry the same impact as Memphis Belle, but I’d certainly watch this one again.

Our reader Terry Winn, commenting on our Facebook page (do like us for regular updates if you haven’t already, by the way!), says: “I’m in a public sector union banned from striking. Wish we could to vent our fury over our treatment.”

“Our pensions are to be reduced and we may have to do this job till we are at least 68; almost impossible given the dangers. We are undermanned and told more cuts are needed, while the government introduce yet more tiers of management into the service. The pay of new staff is so low standards have suffered and we haven’t had a payrise for years.”

Meanwhile, Ryan Harrison says: “I’m sick of all these strikes and protests and riots and marches! Everyone has just got sodding greedy! If you havea job then be grateful for that. Everyone is just out marching for more all the time.

“Why cant people accept if they’ve had it good for so long that things are going to get a bit tough as we enter a double dip recession?! Work hard, keep your job and be happy. I’m sure if your bonuses drop now as soon as the economy picks up they will come back.”

A gangway between HMS Belfast and the shore collapsed into the River Thames this lunchtime.

Three workmen aboard the gangway reportedly scrambled clear as it fell into the water. London Ambulance Service took two people with “minor injuries” to St Thomas’ Hospital.

Lifeboats from the RNLI station at Tower Hill attended the scene, although luckily nobody fell into the river. The 170 people aboard Belfast are now being evacuated by boat.

London Fire Brigade attended the scene to repair the gangway. The fire service were, ironically, due to carry out a training exercise aboard her this afternoon.

Belfast, a Town-class light cruiser originally commissioned in 1939, is a museum ship operated by the Imperial War Museum.

The IWM has stated that Belfast will remain closed to the public until further notice.

It is not known why the gangway collapsed, although other reports suggest that it was undergoing maintenance at the time.

editor’s note: if you are the person who took the picture on the left, please get in touch – unfortunately I can’t find the person who posted it on Twitter!

Our reader Niyanta Shah sent us this picture of the collapsed gangway, from a different angle.

Katherine Goldberg, 25, downed a bottle of whisky on a Virgin Atlantic flight and became so drunk that she became under the “alcohol-induced illusion” that the man was her boyfriend, Isleworth Crown court heard yesterday.

Goldberg, who pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to sexual assault and being drunk on an aircraft, was on board Virgin Atlantic flight VS602 from Johannesburg to Heathrow on 24th August when the incident happened. She was returning from a trip to South Africa where she had celebrated the end of her teaching exams.

Her behaviour was described by witnesses as “very irritating” because she disturbed them while they were trying to rest, said James O’Connell, prosecuting.

One member of the cabin crew “took an interest in her care” and tried to calm her down. O’Connell continued: “However, it was at this point that the defendant’s antics changed and became sexual in nature. She was heard to tell the air steward: ‘Let me and you go somewhere. You can touch me anywhere you want, I don’t mind.’”

“In her complete alcoholic funk,” added O’Connell, “she was confusing him with her current boyfriend and a previous boyfriend.

“She was somehow imagining this was her boyfriend with whom she was interacting.”

The court was told that Goldberg, who has been suspended from her job as a teacher at a Montessori school, has since admitted to having an alcohol problem, is now abstinent and attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings five times a week.

She also went on a one-month residential course after realising she had hit “rock bottom”.

Goldberg was fined £1500, ordered to carry out an 11-month community order and 80 hours of unpaid work, and to pay £250 costs. Had she received a 12-month order, she would have been forced to sign the sex offenders’ register, barring her from working with children.

Judge Andrew McDowall said: “I would be wrong to impose a lifetime punishment by preventing you working in a profession where you clearly have talent.”
